book Keywords of the Balkan Route

The keywords published in e-ERIM are closely connected to the book Balkanska ruta: pojmovnik europskog režima na periferiji EU (2024), also available in a revised Slovenian edition Balkanska pot: pojmovnik evropskega režima iregulariziranih migracij na periferiji Evropske unije (2025). The book extensively references keywords from e-ERIM, and the connections between the book and the online glossary go beyond lexicographic networking. Some keywords in the book originated as expanded versions of texts originally published on e-ERIM, or through linking and reshaping multiple e-ERIM entries, while some concepts written for the book were later divided into shorter texts, modified, and added to e-ERIM.

The book approaches the current migration regime shaped by proscribed and criminalized migrant movements through Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, and the surrounding countries by way of keywords. Through its alphabetical arrangement of texts, cross-references, and other formal and content-related features, it follows the generic characteristics of a lexicon. At the same time, due to the relative comprehensiveness in elaborating concepts, openness to their re-examination, and rejection of neutrality, it is closer to a collection or edited volume of ethnographically-based academic texts than a lexicon. In addition to being read as an edited volume, these keywords can also be approached as an authored book with twenty-two chapters that are explicitly (through cross-references) and implicitly (through perspectives, themes, and examples) interconnected and can be read in sequence or not.
