The ERIM Map of Border Deaths symbolically represents sites of border deaths and burial places along the so-called Balkan route. It captures only a small fraction of border deaths, understood as premature, violent deaths resulting from the illegalization of movement in the context of the European border control regime.
The map is based on ethnographic and archival research conducted within the ERIM research project and subsequently continued by project associates, as well as on data published in the comprehensive 4D database, compiled by individuals, groups, organizations, and collectives such as Klikaktiv, Djeluj.ba, Solidarity Line Croatia, and Prehod. The map reflects data collected up to July 2026.
All locations shown on the map are for orientation only. In the descriptions, grave coordinates are marked as “approximate” when the location of the cemetery is known but the exact position of the grave is not, and as “unknown” when only the town or village is known but not the cemetery. Coordinates marked as “GPS, mobile” were recorded with a mobile phone’s GPS, which may itself be imprecise.
This map is published to honor the memory of the deceased and out of respect for their struggles, families, and communities. Please approach it with care and responsibility. The dataset is archived at: https://repozitorij.ief.hr/object/ief:962.
